At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, I wrote a guest piece for Baraz Magazine detailing how this was going to be Edin Dzeko’s “Season of Redemption,” after a lackluster performance the entirety of last year. Dzeko has not only matched my expectations, but he’s far exceeded them.
Dzeko stands tall now as the leading scorer in Serie A with 12 goals, ahead of Torino’s Andrea Belotti (10) and Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi (10). The Bosnian now has a total of 17 goals on the season including five in the Europa League.
Roma’s latest match was against Pescara at home, where Dzeko netted twice for a 3-2 victory thanks to some assists from Diego Perotti. The match before that, Dzeko scored a cool hat trick against Viktoria Plzen in Europa League action. Roma is now top of Group E with 11 points.
The striker’s form is undeniable. Five goals in his last two matches, and 12 in hist last 10. This type of prolific goalscoring has propelled Roma to second place in Serie A, only four points behind Juventus. Roma now face fierce rivals Lazio away on December 4th. If Roma is to keep up the title chase, Dzeko will need to continue to play hero for the club, even in the face of the fiercest competition.
