Some of us can’t get enough of feel-good stories, especially ones that mix (get it?) football into the equation. This one is somewhat strange and unexpected. What sort of connection does Mix Diskerud (U.S National Team) have to far-away FK Zeljeznicar, Sarajevo’s blue club? Not much, it turns out. But why should it matter?
The New York City FC player purchased 50 seats at the Grbavica Stadium, which was one of the most heavily damaged football grounds in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war. The club is currently having a drive to raise money through sponsorships and seat purchases. Notable Bosnian footballers such as Edin Dzeko have also bought in.
Diskerud decided to contribute to the cause after hearing about it from his personal friend and NYCFC fan, Emil Ljesnjanin, who also donated 50 seats.
Interestingly, Diskerud spent time in Sarajevo with the U.S. National Team in 2013, playing 45 minutes in the U.S’s 4-3 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly fixture.
Diskerud didn’t just buy 50 seats, he bought a place in the hearts of Zeljeznicar fans everywhere.
